Ambit and Snarl

So the Big Day is here – and now it’s time for some details on my other upcoming project! And here we go.

Ambit Afterman is the Chosen One. Born with the mark of the silver bellflower on his palm and given a magical spear, he is the one whose coming the prophecy foretold.

When he was only a boy his home was destroyed and his family slaughtered by demons who hoped to slay the Chosen One before the prophecy could be fulfilled.

Now, it is Ambit’s destiny to embark upon a mighty quest to slay the nine Demon Lords in their volcano lairs, avenge his family, and so drive demonkind from his homeland forever.

Unfortunately, he would much rather drink beer and get laid – destiny can go fuck itself.

Together with his demon friend Snarl, Ambit sets out on a mighty quest – to make sure the prophecy doesn’t come true, and avoid doing anything heroic under any circumstances. Along the way he will make polite conversation with demons, not deliver any great speeches, not train with the wise monks, and weasel his way out of adventure and into the nearest pub. But there may just be time to have cheap sex with the beautiful princess along the way.

There isn’t a map this time around, because I was too lazy to draw one. There also isn’t any artwork I was prepared to share, because lazy. This seemed rather appropriate, so I decided to leave it at that.

Ambit and Snarl (working title only), coming in 2015 – the only novel in which a major plot point was decided upon by the author flipping a coin.

The Drachengott

Well, Christmas has finally come down on all our heads for another year – and now it’s time for me to give you, my readers, your present from me. Here it is – my big news which I’ve been sitting on for over a month.

Last week I signed a contract with my friends at Voyager, for five new novels to be published under their new Impulse program – worldwide. This means I will now be publishing six books next year, including Tales of Cymria with Satalyte Publishing, and this brings my total number of commercially published works up to 13. Not bad!

As for the new books with Voyager, they consist of a completely new epic fantasy series plus one standalone satirical work, and here are the details!

This is Wendland, a Germanic country whose people live under the shadow of the ancient creature known as the Drachengott. A dragon the size of a mountaintop, worshipped by people who call themselves the Jungen, the Drachengott is said to be as old as time – the all-powerful maker of the world. The Jungen serve him and are granted the gift of magic in return. The powerless Gottlosen are persecuted. And the rebellious Ketzer, Jungen who have turned traitor, use magic for their own selfish purposes.

Map

Other, lesser dragons serve the Drachengott, and his loyal Jungen, faithful servants to their creator’s will.

All but one of them.

The black dragon. Abandoned by the Jungen who summoned her, condemned by the Drachengott himself, who names her Syn – “defiance” – she is an outcast.

I drew this one during a German class, so it's rough - but it's still the best picture I've done of her.

Alone and friendless, thirsting for revenge, Syn does not know which way to turn. But then a strange dream comes to her – a dream of four humans and the weapons they hold. Four humans with a special destiny: to kill the Drachengott and set Wendland free.

Trusting her visions, Syn sets out on a journey to find the four warriors she has seen, and she is prepared to guide them to their destinies at any cost – through wind and fire, earth and water, beyond death itself, to her final destination at the mountain of the Drachengott himself.

But Syn is not prepared for the very last thing she expects to find between herself and the future she dreams of – the one thing that could change everything.

Love…

(I will provide details of the standalone satire in a separate post to come – stay tuned!)

Lest We Forget

Happy Remembrance Day, everybody.

I wondered if “happy” was an appropriate word to use here, and finally decided that it was. I know that if I had laid down my life for the sake of future generations, I’d want them to be happy about it. Knowing they were enjoying what I gave them would be good enough for me.

As an archivist, I’ve found the phrase “lest we forget” has taken on new meaning for me. My job, after all, is to preserve what should not be forgotten, and by now I’ve come to see just how important that is.

Speaking of which, here is a picture of some very special items. My grandfather, Ken J Taylor (yes, we have the same initials) was a Major General in the Australian Army, and fought in the Korean War. Sadly he died some years ago, and as the surviving K.J.Taylor I inherited his monogrammed handkerchiefs. I also inherited these – some of his old badges and epaulettes (if that’s the right word). When they were first shown to me, I admit it – I started to cry a bit. The weight of memory was just too much at that moment.

My grandfather was a wonderful man – remarkable, to use his own favourite word – and thinking of him recently made me think of the importance of memory. In the end everyone dies, and that makes the things we leave behind that much more important.

My grandfather is gone now, but he left plenty behind. Us, his descendents, and our memories of him. He taught me so much, and not always directly. The way he lived, his view of the world, showed me how much you can learn if you just get out in the world and see what’s there. He never lost his sense of curiosity, or his sense of humour, and those are two of the greatest gifts anyone can have.

Our forebears are a part of who we are, no matter who they were or whether we even knew them. And those who died in World War One – they’re a part of us too, because they helped to create the world we live in now. And that’s something that should never be forgotten.

I have just created a Facebook page especially for the griffin series – which really needs an overall title, now I think about it. Please do stop by!

Let’s Face It

Having joined Twitter, I have also now joined Facebook.

All future news announcements will be made there and the “news” page on the website will be retired. Feel free to friend me or “like” my posts, and all that other Facebook carry-on. Meanwhile the website will be used to list information about the books rather than as a news site/contact point.
