Teasers for The Shadowed Throne

Next month, in April, The Shadowed Throne – book two of the Risen Sun trilogy – will be published here in Australia and in New Zealand. That’s only four weeks away!

And so, in keeping with tradition, it’s time for some teasers. Don’t read them if you haven’t read The Shadow’s Heir, or if you’d prefer to go into the new book completely blind. For everyone else… here you go! Here are some facts which I can confirm about The Shadowed Throne

-At the end of The Shadow’s Heir, Laela became Queen of the North. But now she’s in more danger than ever before; not only does her father’s cousin  Saeddryn want to get rid of her, but the Night God does as well. Things will get ugly, and fast

-A major character from the first trilogy will die

-But new major character will also appear on the scene. That’s already been given away by the blurb and the cover, so I can come out and say it: the new character is Kullervo Taranisäii, son of Skade and Arenadd. Kullervo is an interesting character; he’s Arenadd’s son, but he’s nothing like him, or Skade. Frankly he’s something of an oddity in my world: unlike everyone else Kullervo’s not a schemer, or ambitious, or cruel. He’s sweet, soft-hearted and gentle despite his griffinish instincts. While writing him, I just wanted to give him a big hug.

-Is Arenadd really gone for good? The answer might be revealed in this book, or at least partly revealed

-In this book we see the consequences of a griffin messing with magic

-We will also finally meet a character who we know exists but haven’t seen so far in the flesh: Saeddryn’s son Caedmon, who was Arenadd’s heir apparent until shortly before Laela’s arrival on the scene.

-Laela’s ex-lover Yorath will make a brief appearance, but their affair is well and truly over now

-And finally… there’s a character everyone has forgotten about and who the other characters assume is dead. But they’re not dead, and in The Shadowed Throne they’ll come back into the centre of things – older, wiser, and bent on revenge…

The End

Yesterday I finished writing book eleven in the series, which is titled The Serpent’s Coils. I timed myself again, and this time it took me two months and eight days to write the novel (last time it took exactly two months to the day). I think that’s enough proof for me to say with confidence that I’ll most likely have finished the series before I turn thirty.

And there was much rejoicing.

Chasing Your Dreams

Have you ever had a dream? Something you wanted so badly you were prepared to do just about anything to get it? I’m sure you have.

Well, once I had a dream. It came to me some years ago, and I never gave up on it. I wanted it so much that I spent years – literally years – waiting and waiting to achieve that dream.

Now, after so long, I’ve done it, and it’s the best feeling in the world.

Yes, that’s right: now, at last, I finally have a phone that plays the theme to the old X-Men cartoon show whenever I get a call. And it plays the “you found an item!” jingle from Link’s Awakening whenever I get a text. Can you say “best phone ever”?

So remember, everybody: if you want something badly enough, sooner or later you might just get it. Don’t give up on your dreams!

Now if only someone would call me…

The Shadowed Throne

I’m happy to announce that last night I finished the final proofread on The Shadowed Throne. It’s 438 pages long, and the Australian edition will be printed in the same large format as The Shadow’s Heir. I’m pretty happy with it – it’s got battle scenes, and some interesting new characters. In March, the month before its April publication, I’ll be posting up my traditional list of teasers for it. For now, time to send the manuscript back to the editor.

A Special Day

Today, the 20th of January, is a special day.

What day is that? My birthday, of course! I’ve just turned 27 years old, and I’m somehow still alive.  What a ghastly thought.

This year I finally caved in and asked for an e-reader. I’m an old-fashioned girl at heart, and I’ll always love printed books, but like most of my fellows I’ve faced up to the fact that e-books are The Future. And, quite frankly, I’ve run out of room on my bookshelf. Also, I’ll be able to play Minecraft on my new little device – it’s not strictly an e-reader; it’s a tablet thingy which you can use as an e-reader. More versatile than a Kobo, and shinier too.

An Historic Event

Today two astonishing things happened. (It’s odd how things tend to happen all at once; I can go for weeks or months without a single really exciting thing happening, and then two of ’em happen on the same day).

First, I’m delighted to announce that I’ve just been formally invited to be a guest at the Melbourne and Gold Coast SupaNova conventions this year, and I’ve accepted both invitations. As you can see from the website both conventions are in April, which is very good timing since The Shadowed Throne will be released in Australia in that month. I’m very excited; I love going to conventions. It’s one of my favourite things to do. So if you’re going to be at either of those, or at the Adeladie ComicCon in March, be sure to come by and say hello! Don’t be shy; I’m harmless. I know from experience that I can’t even intimidate six-year-old kids.

Today also marks an historic occasion for me: about seven years after releasing my first novel, I got my first ever fan letter. Don’t get me wrong – I’ve had fan emails and comments on my website. But this was an actual letter, sent to me in the post, and it came from France, of all places. I’m so pleased and proud I’m giving serious thought to framing it.  It’s beautifully hand-written, too.
